چکیده

In an effort to gain a better understanding of the digestive physiology of the Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, we measured the initial defecation time and rate of digesta passage using chromic oxide (Cr2O3) and frozen corn kernels as markers. IDT ranged from 9.5 to 19 h (mean 14 + 4.8 h), which was a longer period of time than that reported for any other pinniped. Rate of digesta passage using a single pulse dose of Cr2O3 was approximately 39 h for two of the three seals, which is also longer than that reported for other pinnipeds. Possible reasons for these longer rates include morphological and physiological differences, age of the seals, and feeding regime. Percent Cr2O3 recovery was low (52.7-74.8%), reflecting the difficulty in collecting liquid stools. Levels of protein and ash (dry matter basis) were 21.70 and 34.79% respectively, which reflects the high protein and mineral content of the herring diet. This study has provided essential baseline data that will provide further insight into the digestive physiology of the Hawaiian monk seal.

Testosterone response to a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist in Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi).

Adult male Hawaiian monk seals were administered a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist to determine its effectiveness in reducing the testicular production of testosterone. Blood samples were collected from four treated seals and two control seals at weekly intervals for 10 weeks and again at the beginning of the following breeding season. The GnRH-agonist had an initial, brief, stim...

An integrated approach for assessing translocation as an effective conservation tool for Hawaiian monk seals

For threatened and endangered species, translocations have been widely used to mitigate multiple sources of mortality that threaten population recovery. Although numerous Hawaiian monk seals Neomonachus schauinslandi have been translocated for a variety of purposes, few monk seal translocations have addressed the problem of prey limitation. To assess the efficacy of using translocations to miti...

Hematology and serum chemistry of the young Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi).

Between January 1984 and May 1987, blood samples were collected from 12 young (3- to 6-mo-old) Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi) that were captured in the wild and held in captivity. All samples evaluated were from clinically normal animals. Average hematologic and serum chemistry values were not remarkable for a young diving mammal. The blood and serum analyses performed established...

STOCK DEFINITION AND GEOGRAPHIC RANGE Hawaiian monk seals are distributed predominantly in six Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) subpopulations at French Frigate Shoals, Laysan and Lisianski Islands, Pearl and Hermes Reef, and Midway and Kure Atoll. Small numbers also occur at Necker, Nihoa, and the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). Genetic variation among NWHI monk seals is extremely low and may...

Pathological findings in the Hawaiian monk seal.

Postmortem examinations were performed on 45 Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi) collected during field research on the beaches of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (USA) from 1981 to 1985. Both males and females of all age groups, perinatal through adult, were examined. Frequent findings included parasites, trauma, cardiovascular disease (congenital and acquired), and respiratory infe...
